Typhoon Inday weakens as habagat brings heavy rains to Philippines

Typhoon Inday has weakened while its outer bands and the enhanced southwest monsoon continue to affect multiple regions with heavy rainfall on July 10.

As of 4 a.m. on Friday, Typhoon Inday was located 620 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes, moving northwest at 20 kilometers per hour. Its maximum sustained winds stood at 150 kilometers per hour with gusts reaching up to 185 kilometers per hour.

PAGASA reported that Inday would be closest to extreme Northern Luzon between Friday night and Saturday morning. Batanes is already experiencing moderate to heavy rain from the system.

The enhanced habagat is forecast to bring heavy to intense rain in Occidental Mindoro and Antique on Friday, with moderate to heavy rain expected in several other provinces including Metro Manila, Zambales, and parts of the Visayas and Mindanao. Gale warnings remain in effect over northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon.

Inday is projected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Saturday. PAGASA Administrator Nathaniel Servando noted that wind signal number 1 may still be hoisted in Batanes after the typhoon leaves the area.
