Subnautica 2 developer apologises for combat response

Unknown Worlds has apologised to players of Subnautica 2 after a developer told those seeking combat options to play another game. The studio acknowledged that its response on Discord made some feel dismissed. It reaffirmed that the title focuses on vulnerability and exploration rather than fighting.

Subnautica 2 entered early access last week and quickly reached two million sales within twelve hours. Hundreds of thousands of players were active at the same time on Steam. The game is set on the ocean planet Proteus and emphasises survival without traditional weapons.

Subnautica 2 reached more than 2 million sales across PC and Xbox Series X/S within hours of its Early Access release on May 14. The game also hit a peak of 467,582 concurrent players on Steam on launch day. Lead designer Anthony Gallegos responded to pre-release piracy incidents in the official Discord server.

Subnautica 2 has sparked debate among players over its limited options for dealing with hostile sea creatures. Many feel the current tools like flares leave them too vulnerable during early access. Developers at Unknown Worlds remain committed to the game's pacifist themes.

Subnautica 2's Steam early access launch is confirmed for May 14, capping the latest phase of the Krafton-Unknown Worlds legal battle. Court filings revealed allegations against Krafton CEO Changham Kim, including consulting ChatGPT to block a $250 million staff bonus, while extending revenue targets for the payout.

Subnautica 2 players have raised alarms over several clauses in the game's end-user license agreement. The EULA sets a maximum payout of $50 for any user damages and prohibits VPN usage while playing.
