Larian elaborates on machine learning for Divinity amid generative AI ban

Larian Studios has detailed its use of machine learning for efficiency in Divinity development, while confirming a ban on generative AI for concept art and enhanced protections for voice actors, as clarified by Machine Learning Director Gabriel Bosque.

In a follow-up to CEO Swen Vincke's announcement during the January 9, 2026, Reddit AMA—where Larian committed to excluding generative AI from Divinity's concept art phase to ensure all visuals are human-created—the studio distinguished between generative AI and machine learning (ML).

Machine Learning Director Gabriel Bosque explained that ML will be limited to repetitive, efficiency-focused tasks. This includes managing over 100,000 voice lines from numerous actors and experiments to enhance Larian's proprietary game engine, freeing developers for creative work. Previously, generative AI aided rapid ideation but was never used for final assets; it is now fully removed from concept art to address fan concerns.

Voice actor protections are a priority: contracts prohibit using recordings to train AI voice models. Bosque stressed that Larian avoids AI-generated voices altogether due to ethical issues, even with actor consent.

This policy, part of Larian's broader AI stance for Divinity (see earlier coverage), supports development speed without compromising artistic integrity.
