Promotion of 1,887 teachers awaits DBM approval

The Department of Education revealed that the promotion of 1,887 retirable Teacher I positions is pending approval from the Department of Budget and Management. This aligns with President Marcos's commitment that no teacher should retire at the entry level. Under Education Secretary Sonny Angara's leadership, over 58,000 promotions have already been processed.

In Manila, Philippines, the Department of Education (DepEd) revealed yesterday that the promotion of 1,887 retirable Teacher I positions is now pending approval by the Department of Budget and Management (DBM). This move is part of a broader career reform effort to accelerate advancement for educators.

The DepEd stated that the recommendation follows President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s pledge that no teacher should retire at the entry level. Under the leadership of Education Secretary Sonny Angara, a total of 58,918 promotions have been processed so far. Of these, 16,025 teachers have received official appointment papers, while 39,296 reclassification applications are still under review, including the 1,887 cases for retirable Teacher I positions.

During the recent World Teachers’ Day observance, Marcos highlighted the significance of Republic Act 12288, known as the Career Progression System for Public School Teachers and School Leaders Act. The law aims to provide wider and clearer career pathways for educators. To address longstanding backlogs in teacher promotions, the DepEd has implemented the Expanded Career Progression system.

This initiative underscores the government's ongoing efforts to improve education quality by offering better opportunities for teachers.
