Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y have secured the top two positions in a recent real-world energy consumption test conducted by Chinese publication Autohome. The vehicles outperformed dozens of rivals under controlled high-speed conditions, highlighting their efficiency advantages. Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun acknowledged the results, pledging to learn from Tesla.

In a controlled evaluation by Autohome, Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y demonstrated superior energy efficiency among Chinese-market electric vehicles. The test involved a steady 120 km/h cruising speed, a 375 kg payload, and a fixed cabin temperature of 24°C with automatic climate control. Under these conditions, the Model 3 achieved 20.8 kWh/100 km, while the Model Y recorded 21.8 kWh/100 km, placing both at the top of the rankings.

This performance underscores Tesla's strengths in drivetrain optimization, software-managed thermal systems, and aerodynamics, particularly in demanding scenarios like high speeds or cold weather where many EVs falter. The results, reported by Sina News and other outlets, reinforce Tesla's reputation for class-leading range and efficiency.

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun responded on Weibo, recognizing Tesla's edge while defending his company's SU7. "The Xiaomi SU7’s energy consumption performance is also very good; you can take a closer look. The fact that its test results are weaker than Tesla’s is partly due to objective reasons: the Xiaomi SU7 is a C-segment car, larger and with higher specifications, making it heavier and naturally increasing energy consumption. Of course, we will continue to learn from Tesla and further optimize its energy consumption performance!" Lei has previously stated that Xiaomi may need three to five years to match Tesla's efficiency benchmark and has supported Tesla's Full Self-Driving software.

The test aligns with Tesla's recent expansions in China, including the launch of the Model 3+ with 830 km CLTC range and the Model Y+ with 820 km range, positioning the brand strongly in the competitive market.

Was die Leute sagen

X users, primarily Tesla enthusiasts and news accounts, praise Model 3 and Y for leading Autohome's real-world high-speed EV efficiency test in China. Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun acknowledged Tesla's superior results, attributing differences to vehicle size and committing to improvements. High-engagement posts highlight Tesla's efficiency edge; rare skeptical replies question test fairness.

Xiaomi has unveiled a mid-cycle update for its popular SU7 electric sedan, boosting range, charging speeds, and safety features ahead of the 2026 model year. The refreshed model starts at $33,000, undercutting the Tesla Model 3 in China, with pre-orders now open. Deliveries are set to begin in April.

In a significant shift in China's electric vehicle market, Xiaomi's SU7 surpassed Tesla's Model 3 in sales for 2025, delivering 258,164 units compared to Tesla's 200,361. This marks the first time since Tesla's 2019 entry into China that another brand has overtaken it in the premium sedan segment. The development highlights intensifying competition, prompting Tesla to launch an insurance subsidy for the Model 3.

Tesla has highlighted the most efficient version of its Model Y electric vehicle available for purchase. The announcement came via a post on X, formerly Twitter, emphasizing efficiency in the popular SUV lineup.

BYD maintained its dominance in China's new energy vehicle market in 2025, capturing 27.2% share despite a 6.3% sales decline. Tesla ranked fifth with 4.9% share after a 4.8% drop in retail sales. Both companies faced challenges amid rising competition.

Tesla has introduced a new Standard Long Range variant of its Model Y electric SUV in Europe, offering up to 657 km of WLTP range at a starting price of €44,990. This rear-wheel-drive model provides a more affordable option with extended battery life compared to the base Standard version. The launch aims to address competitive pressures in the European market amid declining sales.

Early data shows Tesla's Model Y driving a strong recovery in electric vehicle sales across Australia in February 2026, following a sluggish January. Combined sales for Tesla and Polestar reached 3,419 units, with year-to-date figures up 61% from 2025. The Model Y accounted for 2,791 of those sales, positioning it as the top seller for the month.

Tesla's vehicle sales in China dropped sharply to 26,006 units in October, marking the weakest performance in three years. This decline, amid rising competition and reduced government incentives, contributed to a dip in the company's shares. The results follow poor sales in key European markets.
