The Colombian textile company Zephir marks eight decades of operations as a family business in its third generation. Despite competition from cheap imports, it has sustained its market position through operational efficiency and modernization. Now, it drives global expansion with a focus on sustainability and markets like the United States and Chile.
Zephir, a family-owned Colombian textile company operating for 80 years, celebrates this milestone while advancing a transformation strategy toward international markets and sustainable fashion. Established across previous generations, the firm has navigated challenges like the influx of low-cost imported products through a model emphasizing operational efficiency, machinery upgrades, and inventory optimization.
Juanita Sáenz, Zephir's general manager, outlined plans for the next five years. “Over the next five years, we project sustainable growth driven by new B2C and B2B business models, exports to strategic markets—such as Chile, the United States, and Latam—a strengthened e-commerce platform, and new product lines with responsible fibers,” stated Sáenz.
In response to environmental demands, Zephir has shifted its production to the exclusive use of eco-friendly, low-impact fibers, incorporating certified suppliers and cleaner dyeing processes. Sáenz emphasized this shift: “The greatest lesson has been understanding that sustainability is not a trend, it is a commitment. We discovered that quality and durability are real ways to care for the planet; that a well-made fabric prevents excessive consumption; and that a transparent supply chain builds trust”.
This initiative aims not only to bolster regional and North American presence but also to enhance digital channels and innovative products, solidifying Zephir's role in Colombia's textile industry.
