El hallazgo proviene de un estudio publicado en Royal Society Open Science que analizó cerca de 20.000 fotografías de colas recopiladas durante cuatro décadas. Los investigadores identificaron a la ballena a través de marcas únicas en su cola, fotografiadas por primera vez en el Banco de los Abrolhos, en Brasil, en 2003, y posteriormente avistada sola en la bahía de Hervey, en Australia, en septiembre de 2025. Una segunda ballena cubrió un mínimo de 14.200 kilómetros tras ser avistada en Queensland en 2007 y cerca de São Paulo en 2019.
