Les personnes proches de la mort font souvent l'expérience de rêves et de visions vivaces impliquant des parents décédés, des animaux de compagnie, des portes, des escaliers et de la lumière, selon des professionnels des soins palliatifs. Ces rencontres procurent du réconfort et aident les patients à accepter leur fin de vie, révèle une nouvelle étude italienne. Les chercheurs notent que ces rêves deviennent plus fréquents et plus réalistes à mesure que la mort approche.

Une équipe dirigée par Elisa Rabitti, du Réseau local de soins palliatifs de Reggio d'Émilie, en Italie, a interrogé 239 médecins, infirmiers, psychologues et autres professionnels s'occupant de patients en phase terminale. Les rêves les plus courants impliquaient des retrouvailles avec des membres de la famille ou des animaux de compagnie disparus. Une patiente a notamment rêvé que son défunt mari lui disait « Je t'attends », ce qui lui a apporté une paix intérieure et l'a aidée à accepter la mort, ont rapporté les chercheurs dans la revue Death Studies.
