高濃度二酸化炭素の吸入がアルツハイマー病関連タンパク質を排出

少人数を対象とした研究により、高濃度の二酸化炭素を断続的に30分間吸入することで、アルツハイマー病に関連するタンパク質を脳から排出できる可能性が示された。この手法は、深い睡眠中に脳が行う自然な老廃物除去活動を模倣するものだ。研究チームは先週、ロンドンで開催されたアルツハイマー病協会国際会議でこの研究成果を発表した。

テキサス大学オースティン校のセフィラ・ライマン氏らが主導したこの研究には、12人の参加者が協力した。その内訳は、認知機能障害のない人が8人、タウタンパク質の蓄積が見られる人が4人、軽度認知障害を持つ人が3人であった。参加者はマスクを装着し、通常の空気と5%の二酸化炭素を含む空気を35秒間隔で交互に30分間吸入した。

この介入により、脳内の血管は深い睡眠時と同様のパターンで拡張と収縮を繰り返し、グリンパティック系(脳の老廃物除去システム)が活性化した。セッション終了の15分後に採取された血液サンプルでは、すべての参加者でベータアミロイドの濃度が上昇しており、脳から排出されたことが示された。一方、タウタンパク質の排出改善は、認知機能低下の兆候がある参加者にのみ認められた。

これらの効果は1時間以内にベースラインへと戻り、研究期間中に副作用は確認されなかった。ビンセント・テイ氏やジェフ・イリフ氏ら専門家によれば、アルツハイマー病の発症リスクや進行への長期的な影響を判断するには、さらなる研究が必要である。
