Karolinska renews efforts to break silence culture

Karolinska University Hospital is intensifying efforts against workplace silence culture. A new working group has been established to increase openness.

Karolinska University Hospital has been reported in recent years to have problems with a culture of silence. A survey from May 2024 showed that 70 percent of doctors experience silence in parts of the operations.

The new management has made the issue a priority. Operations manager Magnus Flodberg and Yvonne Dellmark, vice chairman of the doctors' association, are part of a working group that has developed workshops for managers and employees.

A more in-depth survey showed that employees often avoid raising problems out of fear of negative reactions or reprisals. According to Dellmark, silence is often related to how the leadership appears.
