배경훈 과학기술정보통신부 장관은 20일 프론티어 AI 모델이 핵무기처럼 전략적 자산이 될 수 있다며 한국이 자체 모델을 개발해야 한다고 강조했다.
배 장관은 세종에서 열린 취임 1주년 기자간담회에서 이같이 밝혔다. 그는 중국 AI 스타트업 문샷이 최근 선보인 키미 K3 모델이 미국 앤스로픽의 패블 모델에 근접했다고 언급하며, 미국이 한 달 전 외국인 접근을 금지한 배경을 지적했다.
"프론티어급 AI 모델은 핵무기처럼 되고 있다"며 특정 국가의 통제 강화 경향이 커질 것이라고 배 장관은 말했다. 정부는 세계적 AI 경쟁력을 위한 프론티어 모델 개발 계획을 수립 중이다.
한국은 AI 풀스택 제공자로서 티베트와 몽골 등에 모델부터 반도체까지 지원하려 한다. 중국의 AI 협력 네트워크 참여 제안에 대해서는 미국과의 관계를 고려해 독자 역량을 강화하면서 최선의 방안을 논의해야 한다고 밝혔다.
