한국항공우주청은 2035년까지 수백 기의 저궤도 위성으로 구성된 통신망을 구축하고, 2030년에 첫 달 착륙을 앞당기겠다고 밝혔다.
한국항공우주청은 7월 3일 경남 진주에서 열린 첨단산업 발전 공청회에서 이 계획을 발표했다. 계획은 이날 이재명 대통령이 주재한 국가우주위원회에서 승인됐다.
통신망 구축에는 128~512기의 위성이 필요하며, 5년마다 최소 4조 원에서 최대 13.2조 원이 소요될 것으로 추산된다. 민간 기업과 함께 특수목적법인을 설립해 위성 데이터를 판매할 예정이며, 2034년까지 17억 달러 이상의 매출을 목표로 한다.
달 탐사 일정도 앞당겨 2029년 달 통신 궤도선, 2030년 누리호를 이용한 소형 착륙선, 2031년 지구-달 탐사선을 발사할 계획이다. 오태석 청장은 "저궤도 위성 통신망은 국가 안보와 통신 주권을 지키는 핵심 인프라"라고 말했다.
