Finance minister Klingbeil urges full pass-through of fuel tax cut

The temporary reduction in the mineral oil tax has been in effect since May 1. Consumer prices for gasoline and diesel have dropped noticeably. Federal Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil expects the oil industry to pass on the relief in full and without delay.

The justification for the Second Energy Tax Reduction Act stresses that the tax cut is designed to be passed on to consumers. This is intended to cushion the short-term price shock and provide relief for citizens and the economy.

Klingbeil announced he would monitor closely to ensure the corporations pass on the relief. He pointed to cartel law, political pressure and a critical public.

The mineral oil industry has already reacted as expected by the legislator, according to the report. Prices fell immediately after the measure took effect.

Despite the fuel tax discount, prices in Germany have risen again after an initial drop. ADAC and the Federal Cartel Office criticize that the 17-cent-per-liter tax cut is not fully passed on to consumers. Oil companies and associations dispute this.
