LTFRB issues show cause order to taxi operator overcharging K-pop idol Soobin

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) issued a show cause order against the operator of a taxi accused of overcharging Korean singer Soobin in Cebu. LTFRB Chair Vigor Mendoza called it a serious offense that tarnishes the country's image internationally. The operator was also ordered to surrender the vehicle's license plate and the driver's license.

The incident appeared in a vlog by Soobin, leader of Tomorrow X Together, in Cebu. Soobin said the trip fare should have been P300, but the driver raised it to P500 due to high gas prices, then doubled it to P1,000 upon arrival.

Soobin refused to pay the increased amount and told the driver he would report the matter. "This is a serious offense especially that this incident puts the name of our country in bad light in the international community. The viral video itself is already strong evidence," LTFRB Chair Vigor Mendoza said.

The LTFRB ordered the operator to explain and surrender the taxi's license plate and the driver's license. While gas prices have risen due to the Middle East conflict, a planned fare hike for most land vehicles was suspended.

The House of Representatives has approved a bill on second reading granting President Marcos special powers to suspend or reduce excise taxes on fuel to cushion the impact of soaring oil prices due to the Middle East conflict. This measure is part of broader government efforts to protect Filipinos from potential increases in commodity prices. Meanwhile, the Department of Transportation is studying a possible fare hike for public transport.

Eight bus operators at the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX) face investigation for overcharging amid President Marcos’ order to suspend fare hikes. The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) will issue show-cause orders to the firms. Non-compliance could lead to penalties.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) are studying a proposal to grant amnesty to transport network vehicle services (TNVS) drivers onboarded despite exceeding the vehicle cap. DOTr Secretary Giovanni Lopez said some transport network companies (TNCs) have surpassed their driver and vehicle limits. Ride-hailing platforms including Joyride and Grab have also reduced their commission rates.

Transport group Manibela announced a nationwide strike from April 15 to 17, coinciding with the government's service contracting program rollout. The action responds to high fuel prices and demands a rollback to P55 per liter. Chairman Mar Valbuena criticized the government's inadequate response to oil price shocks.

MANILA, Philippines — The transport strike entered its fourth week as drivers’ groups intensified calls for a rollback in fuel prices. At the current world market rate, fuel prices should range from P70 to P75 per liter, said Manibela chairperson Mar Valbuena.

At least 27 bus operators received P10,000 in fuel aid per unit yesterday at the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange, led by President Marcos to counter soaring oil prices. This forms part of the Department of Transportation's P2.5 billion program for public utility vehicles.

Senators criticized transport network vehicle services (TNVS) companies for their list of driver-beneficiaries containing repetitive names, allowing some drivers to receive aid more than once. Social Welfare and Development Secretary Rex Gatchalian called these ‘ghost drivers’ and said the government could have lost up to P2.7 billion if not flagged.
