Anato warns of airline crisis impact on users and agencies

Anato expressed concern over airline insolvencies like Spirit Airlines and their effects on passengers and travel agencies in Colombia.

The Colombian Association of Travel Agencies and Tourism (Anato) called for preventive measures from authorities to protect consumers amid airline cessations of operations.

The group noted that situations like Spirit Airlines leave thousands of passengers vulnerable after prepaying for unprovided services. They also impact agencies facing direct pressure for refunds and claims.

“We consider it necessary for the competent authority Supertransporte, Aeronáutica Civil and SIC to adopt preventive measures,” said Paula Cortés Calle, executive president of Anato.

Spirit Airlines reported it is proceeding with an orderly liquidation and that passengers with credit or debit cards will receive automatic refunds, while those who purchased through agencies must process returns with the intermediaries.

Colombia's Aeronáutica Civil confirmed that Spirit Airlines' global operations closure impacts about 10,000 passengers in the country. The airline immediately suspended all flights after failing its financial reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. Authorities and other airlines activated contingency measures to assist those affected.
