La CPI garantiza un juicio justo e imparcial para Duterte

La Corte Penal Internacional ha asegurado que el equipo de defensa del expresidente Rodrigo Duterte tendrá tiempo suficiente para prepararse para su juicio por cargos de crímenes de lesa humanidad. En una entrevista con The STAR, la portavoz de la CPI, Oriane Maillet, aseguró al público que se llevará a cabo un juicio justo, imparcial e independiente para el expresidente Rodrigo Duterte.

“Los juicios en la CPI pueden ser complejos, (pueden) llevar un poco más de tiempo que a nivel nacional debido al tipo de delitos que requieren que se presente una gran cantidad de pruebas ante el tribunal, y algunos de los desafíos que pueden surgir durante los procedimientos”, dijo Maillet.

“Pero estamos comprometidos a celebrar un juicio justo, independiente e imparcial, donde la defensa tendrá tiempo suficiente para preparar su caso y donde se respetarán los derechos de las víctimas”, agregó.

El 23 de abril, la Sala de Cuestiones Preliminares I de la CPI confirmó todos los cargos de crímenes de lesa humanidad contra Duterte, allanando el camino para un juicio completo. La Sala de Primera Instancia III, constituida tras la decisión, celebrará su primera conferencia sobre el estado del caso el 27 de mayo. Maillet dijo que los jueces de primera instancia establecerán el cronograma de apertura basándose en las presentaciones de las partes.

El juicio de Duterte será público y los procedimientos se transmitirán en línea con cierto retraso. “Los jueces pueden decidir celebrar ciertas audiencias a puerta cerrada... si existe la necesidad de proteger a los testigos o a las víctimas”, señaló Maillet.
