Des ingénieurs de Columbia créent une méthode plus rapide pour extraire le lithium

Des chercheurs de la Columbia Engineering ont mis au point une nouvelle technique pour extraire le lithium des saumures souterraines plus rapidement et avec moins de dommages environnementaux. Cette approche utilise un solvant thermosensible et évite le recours aux grands bassins d'évaporation couramment utilisés dans la production actuelle.

La méthode, appelée extraction sélective par solvant commutable ou S3E, fonctionne en absorbant le lithium et l'eau des saumures à température ambiante. Le chauffage du solvant permet ensuite de libérer le lithium purifié tout en autorisant la réutilisation du matériau. Les tests ont montré des taux d'extraction jusqu'à 10 fois plus élevés pour le lithium que pour le sodium, et 12 fois plus élevés que pour le potassium.
