Kenya's Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir has confirmed that construction is underway on 25 kilometers of the Rironi-Mau Summit Highway. The project, launched by President William Ruto in November 2025, aims to modernize key routes connecting Nairobi to western Kenya and East African neighbors.
On January 10, 2026, Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir confirmed that construction of the Rironi-Mau Summit Highway is progressing steadily, with a total of 25 kilometers currently under construction. The China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) is handling the first 5km at Rironi and 5km at Gilgil. Meanwhile, the Shandong Construction Company has started work on 10km at Kariandusi and 5km at Mau Summit.
Chirchir stated, "Today, I inspected the ongoing construction works along the Rironi-Mau Summit Highway. These are just part of the initial works programme. I expect work to ramp up in more sites along the way in the coming days."
He added, "I expressed my satisfaction with the project's progress and commended the contractors for their commendable pace of work and swift mobilisation on site, noting the positive momentum in the delivery of this critical infrastructure project."
The Ksh170 billion project utilizes a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with funding sourced locally. It comprises two sections: the Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit Road spanning 175 kilometers, and the Nairobi-Maai Mahiu-Naivasha Road adding 58 kilometers, both to be upgraded into multi-lane dual carriageways.
The project is expected to be completed by 2028 and will include features such as interchanges, dedicated truck lanes, pedestrian bridges, and intelligent transportation technology. It aims to streamline traffic on this vital artery connecting Nairobi to Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Chirchir said, "The dualling of the Road is very critical as it aims to reduce congestion, improve road safety, and facilitate the movement of goods and passengers between Nairobi, Nakuru, Western Kenya, and our East African neighbours, thereby promoting regional integration and boosting trade."
The initiative is optimistic about creating jobs and unlocking untapped economic potential in the western region.
