研究チームは、銀河の中心から3万光年以上離れた場所にある、観測史上最も遠い超大質量ブラックホールを発見した。この発見は、ブラックホールが恒星を引き裂く「潮汐破壊現象」の観測によってもたらされたものである。

メリーランド大学のロバート・スタイン氏率いる研究チームは、カリフォルニア州の「ツヴィッキー一時的現象観測施設(Zwicky Transient Facility)」のデータから、機械学習アルゴリズムが光の爆発を検知したことでこの天体を特定した。その後の追加望遠鏡による観測により、「TDE 2025abcr」と名付けられたこの現象が確認された。

スタイン氏は、これまでの銀河中心付近や矮小銀河の衝突とは異なり、今回の場所は空の何もない空間のように見えると指摘した。その距離は、太陽系から天の川銀河の中心までの距離を数千光年以上上回る。

漂流するブラックホールは、通常、銀河の衝突によって一方の中心ブラックホールが放出されることで発生する。スタイン氏によれば、今回の発見は、こうした衝突の頻度や銀河の進化過程を解明する手がかりになる可能性がある。

チリにあるベラ・C・ルービン天文台の「時空レガシーサーベイ(Legacy Survey of Space and Time)」が最近運用を開始しており、今後数年間で数百件もの同様の現象が検出されると期待されている。
