現代自動車グループは5月13日、光州市で政府主導の自動運転プロジェクトに参加すると発表した。現代自動車と起亜は、「アイオニック5」をベースにした約200台の車両を開発する。
現代自動車と起亜は5月13日、韓国国土交通部、光州市、およびAutonomous A2ZやRide Fluxといったスタートアップ企業と覚書を締結した。式典はソウルから南西に約270キロ離れた光州市で開催された。
この合意に基づき、両社は「アイオニック5」をベースとした約200台の自動運転車を開発し、配車サービスやフリート管理を含むモビリティサービスを同市内で実施する。傘下の42dotが開発したAIソフトウェア「Atria」が道路データを分析し、車両の性能向上を図る。
本プロジェクトは、指定エリア内において人間の介入なしで全タスクを処理するレベル4の自動運転を目指している。政府は規制緩和を行い、光州市を自動運転の特別区域にする方針である。
金允徳（キム・ユンドク）国土交通部長官は「米国や中国といった自動運転の先駆者に遅れをとることは許されない」と述べ、韓国が同分野で世界トップ3に入ることを目指すと強調した。
