フォルクスワーゲングループは、世界最大の自動車市場である中国において外国ブランドの魅力が低下する中、数年にわたる低調な販売実績を受け、大衆向けブランドであるシュコダを中国本土から撤退させる。フォルクスワーゲンの広報担当者は木曜、サウスチャイナ・モーニング・ポスト(SCMP)への書面回答の中で、2026年半ばまでに同チェコブランドの新車販売を終了するという以前の報道を否定せず、「シュコダ・オートはグローバル戦略を再編し、インドやASEAN地域などの成長市場に注力している」と述べた。また、広報担当者は中国について「引き続きフォルクスワーゲングループの戦略の中核にある」とし、現地のニーズに合わせた革新的な製品で中国でのポートフォリオを拡大する方針を示した。1896年に設立されたシュコダは、SAICフォルクスワーゲン(上海大衆汽車)との提携を通じて2005年に中国市場に参入した。2007年には現地生産の第一弾として「オクタビア」を投入し、フォルクスワーゲンの技術プラットフォームを活用して「手頃なドイツ設計」の選択肢としての地位を確立した。2018年には、同社にとって最大の市場である中国で約34万1000台の納車を記録し、500以上のディーラーがオクタビア、スペルブ、コディアックなどのモデルを販売していた。今回の決定は、日本の三菱自動車が7月に発表した中国北東部・遼寧省瀋陽市での合弁事業終了(40年以上の事業運営に終止符)に続くものである。
