Uma vacina experimental de mRNA demonstrou eficácia contra três cepas do vírus Ebola em testes com roedores. A vacina tem como alvo os vírus Zaire, Sudão e Bundibugyo. Os pesquisadores a desenvolveram em meio a um surto contínuo do vírus Bundibugyo na África.

Yanfeng Yao e seus colegas do Instituto de Virologia de Wuhan criaram a vacina combinando sequências de mRNA para glicoproteínas de cada vírus, juntamente com uma nucleoproteína compartilhada dentro de uma nanopartícula lipídica. Nos testes, camundongos imunizados obtiveram proteção completa contra os vírus Zaire e Sudão e forte proteção contra o Bundibugyo. Hamsters também receberam proteção total contra a exposição ao vírus Sudão.
