Forskare har funnit bevis på jättebläckfiskar och hundratals andra arter i djupa undervattenskanjoner utanför västra Australien. Resultaten kommer från en expedition som använde miljö-DNA-analys för att utforska djup på över 4 kilometer.

Forskare från Curtin University ledde studien ombord på Schmidt Ocean Institutes forskningsfartyg R/V Falkor. De samlade in mer än 1 000 vattenprover från kanjonerna Cape Range och Cloates, cirka 1 200 kilometer norr om Perth nära Nyinggulu-kusten. Analysen identifierade 226 arter från 11 djurgrupper, inklusive flera som aldrig tidigare registrerats i västra australiska vatten.
