Le studio id Software a licencié 136 employés, soit plus de la moitié de ses effectifs, dans le cadre d'une vague de réductions d'emplois plus large chez Microsoft.

Les coupes chez le développeur de Doom et Quake sont survenues lors d'une semaine au cours de laquelle Microsoft a supprimé 1 600 postes, tandis que 1 600 autres rôles au sein de la division Xbox restent menacés. Le studio a publié une déclaration indiquant que, bien qu'il ait été touché, il conserve l'équipe nécessaire au développement de ses jeux et de sa technologie.

Le directeur de jeu Hugo Martin a précisé que le studio a désormais la taille qu'il avait lors du développement de Doom 2016 et que l'id Tech reste actif. Selon certaines informations, l'équipe réduite aurait commencé les travaux préliminaires sur un nouveau jeu Doom.

Les licenciements ont touché 158 employés de la branche Xbox au Texas, incluant le personnel d'id Software et de ZeniMax Media, dont 146 étaient syndiqués. Un employé de longue date, connu sous le numéro 13, qui avait rejoint l'entreprise à l'époque de Romero et Carmack, figure parmi les personnes licenciées.

id Software a récemment publié l'extension Revelations pour Doom: The Dark Ages.
