MIT researchers report that the amino acid cysteine, found in many protein-rich foods, can enhance the small intestine’s ability to regenerate after injury in mice by triggering an immune-to-stem-cell signaling cascade. The work, published in Nature, raises the possibility—still untested in people—that diet or supplementation could someday help ease some treatment-related intestinal damage during radiation or chemotherapy.

Researchers have shown that rejuvenating muscle stem cells from old mice leads to larger muscle growth and improved recovery after injury. The approach could one day help older people regain strength and mobility. Experiments demonstrated clear benefits in leg function and tissue repair.

Researchers at Duke-NUS Medical School have discovered how physical activity restores muscle repair in older adults by lowering levels of the DEAF1 gene. The findings, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, explain why exercise helps aging muscles clear damaged proteins and maintain strength.

Researchers reported at Digestive Disease Week (DDW) 2026 that older mice given fecal microbiota transplants made from their own preserved, younger-age stool samples showed less liver inflammation and injury—and none developed liver cancer in the experiment.

A modified Mediterranean-style diet low in protein but supplemented with methionine helped older mice stay healthier while eating more food. Researchers at the University of Southern California led the study, which also drew on human data linking lower animal protein intake to reduced obesity and diabetes rates. The findings were published in Cell Metabolism.
