Germany's greenhouse gas emissions fell by just 0.1 percent in 2025 to 649 million tons of CO₂ equivalents, marking the smallest decline in four years. Opposition parties Greens and Left criticize the federal government for shortcomings and warn of EU fines in billions. Environment Minister Carsten Schneider highlights progress but calls for a push.

India's Union Budget 2026 includes a ₹20,000 crore outlay for a carbon credit programme, leading to debate over its focus on heavy industries or farmers. Official documents link it to Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) for hard-to-abate sectors, while some narratives highlight potential income for farmers through sustainable practices.

The Brazilian government announced plans to tighten carbon market rules in response to a fraud involving companies linked to former banker Daniel Vorcaro, owner of Banco Master. Carbon Market Secretary Cristina Reis from the Ministry of Finance stated the case is serious and requires regulatory clarity to prevent irregularities. The measures aim to map environmental assets and distinguish legitimate credits from accounting and land frauds.

A new study shows that beavers in northern Switzerland have turned a stream corridor into a major carbon sink, storing over 1,000 tonnes of carbon in just 13 years. Researchers found these wetlands capture carbon at rates up to ten times higher than similar areas without beavers. The findings highlight beavers' potential role in climate mitigation.

New research reveals that Brazil's cerrado savanna, often overshadowed by the Amazon rainforest, holds six times more carbon per hectare in its underground peat than the Amazon's biomass. This biodiverse ecosystem faces threats from climate change and expanding agribusiness. Protecting its wetlands could significantly aid global efforts to curb planet-warming gases.

The Ministry for Ecological Transition will approve two extraordinary credits worth 220 and 450 million euros to offset the 80% cut in fees for electrointensive industry and the suspension of the 7% IVPEE tax in 2026. These measures are part of the Real Decreto Ley approved by the Council of Ministers on Friday, published in the BOE on Saturday, and effective from Sunday.

Tropical peatlands are burning at levels unseen in at least 2,000 years, according to a new study analyzing ancient charcoal records. Fires had declined for over 1,000 years due to natural climate patterns but surged in the 20th century, particularly in Southeast Asia and Australasia. Human activities like land drainage for agriculture are driving this increase.
