Xbox CTO explains recent server outage and next steps

Xbox chief technical officer Scott Van Vliet addressed a major server outage that struck on Monday. He identified a failing licensing service as the cause and outlined measures to prevent similar disruptions.

The outage, which began on Monday, affected players worldwide by disabling purchases, downloads, offline play, and even disc-based games. Services were restored at 2:30pm PT that day.

Van Vliet stated that the issue stemmed from "a licensing service that sits outside of Xbox, but which Xbox depends upon." This failure prevented sign-ins and entitlement checks, blocking access to game libraries.

The CTO confirmed that the affected service was isolated and traffic shifted while engineers investigated. Xbox is conducting a full post-incident review focused on dependencies, detection, and faster communication with users.

Van Vliet added that more details on Xbox services and improvements will be shared in the coming weeks.
