Researchers at the University of California, Irvine report that a machine-learning system called SIGNET can infer cause-and-effect links between genes in human brain tissue, revealing extensive rewiring of gene regulation—especially in excitatory neurons—in Alzheimer’s disease.

A recent report examines claims by big tech companies that generative AI can help combat climate change, finding limited evidence to support them. Of 154 specific assertions, only a quarter referenced academic research, while a third offered no proof at all. The analysis highlights Google's 2023 claim of AI reducing global emissions by 5 to 10 percent by 2030 as an example.

Chinese researchers have developed a liquid cooling system using ammonium thiocyanate that achieves rapid cooling in 20 seconds. By mimicking the squeeze of a wet sponge through pressure changes, it instantly absorbs massive heat, potentially offsetting the soaring energy demands of AI data centers.

Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University have identified hidden fluid flows inside cells that rapidly transport proteins to the leading edge, challenging traditional views of cellular movement. The discovery, made during a classroom experiment, could explain why some cancer cells spread aggressively. The findings appear in Nature Communications.

A Google AI trial rerouted hundreds of American Airlines flights from the US to Europe, reducing contrail formation that contributes to global warming. The 17-week study showed a 62 per cent drop in visible contrails for optimised routes. Overall contrail reduction across the trial was 11.6 per cent.

China's Ministry of Transport and three other government bodies have released an action plan to deeply integrate artificial intelligence into the shipping industry by 2027, including at least three pilot zones and more than 100 smart vessels. The strategy aims to bolster maritime operations and address bottlenecks amid global competition. By 2030, Beijing seeks to fully master key technologies and achieve a globally advanced level.

A new analysis reveals that most studies on coastal vulnerability have underestimated current sea levels by an average of 24 to 27 centimetres because they overlooked key oceanographic factors. This methodological blind spot means that flooding and erosion risks will materialize sooner than previously projected, potentially affecting millions more people by 2100. Researchers from Wageningen University highlight the need for better integration of sea-level data in climate impact assessments.
