Cientistas da UC San Diego desenvolvem IA para mapeamento detalhado de correntes oceânicas

Pesquisadores da Universidade da Califórnia, em San Diego, criaram uma ferramenta de IA chamada GOFlow que mapeia correntes oceânicas em vastas áreas do oceano com detalhes sem precedentes, utilizando imagens térmicas de satélite. A equipe publicou suas descobertas na Nature Geoscience em 13 de abril. O sistema rastreia correntes pequenas e em rápida mudança que influenciam o movimento de calor, carbono, nutrientes e poluentes.

Luc Lenain, oceanógrafo da Scripps Institution of Oceanography da UC San Diego e autor principal do estudo, desenvolveu o GOFlow após observar padrões de temperatura em imagens de satélite do Atlântico Norte, particularmente da Corrente do Golfo. A rede neural foi treinada em correntes oceânicas simuladas e, em seguida, aplicada a imagens térmicas reais de satélites meteorológicos. Ao monitorar mudanças nas temperaturas da superfície, o GOFlow infere a atividade das correntes subjacentes.
