كشفت دراسة ممولة فيدرالياً على الفئران أن بعض السمات الموروثة تتبع أنماطاً غير مندلية من خلال تغيرات لاجينية. وحدد البحث مئات من أحداث مثيلة الحمض النووي غير المتوقعة عبر الأجيال، كما وثق أول حالة طفرة موازية طبيعية معروفة في الثدييات.

تتبع باحثون في جامعة جونز هوبكنز وجامعة تكساس إيه اند إم مثيلة الحمض النووي عبر ثلاثة أجيال من الفئران. وقد فحص الباحثون 12 نمطاً وراثياً معروفاً ووجدوا أن حوالي 7 في المائة منها لا تتبع قواعد مندل الكلاسيكية. ومن بين هذه الحالات، كانت هناك 54 حالة ظهرت فيها المثيلة لدى النسل دون أن تكون موجودة لدى أي من الأبوين.
