炭の発見によりフォン・ド・ゴーム洞窟壁画の年代が判明

科学者らが、フランスのフォン・ド・ゴーム洞窟にある先史時代の壁画について、隠れていた微量の炭を利用して初めて年代を特定した。分析の結果、バイソンの図像は約1万3000年前に描かれたものと判明し、また仮面のような図像は数千年にわたる複数の期間を経て追加されたものであることが分かった。

研究チームは、ラマン顕微分光法およびハイパースペクトルイメージングを用いて、2つの図像の黒色顔料に含まれる炭を特定した。これまでこれらの顔料は、直接年代測定が不可能な鉄やマンガンの酸化物のみで構成されていると考えられていた。

バイソンから採取した微小なサンプルは、較正年代(calBP)で1万3461年から1万3162年前という結果を示した。一方、仮面のような図像のサンプルからは、1万5981年から1万5121年前、1万5297年から1万4246年前、および8993年から8590年前という、3つの異なる時期の範囲が算出された。

これらの調査結果は、洞窟が一度の制作活動ではなく、長い間隔を置いて何度も訪れられ、手が加えられていたことを示唆している。PNAS誌に掲載されたこの研究は、パリ国立高等化学学校(Chimie ParisTech-PSL)の研究者らが主導し、フランス国立科学研究センター(CNRS)やフランス美術館修復研究センターなど複数のフランスの機関が参加した。

この手法により、これまで年代測定が不可能だったドルドーニュ地方の他の洞窟壁画についても、測定が可能になる可能性がある。
