In a two-year U.S. trial of 1,658 adolescents and adults with prior kidney stones, a technology-assisted hydration program modestly increased urine output but did not significantly reduce symptomatic stone recurrences compared with standard care.

A 25-year study of more than 25,000 U.S. participants found that regular consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and fruit juice starting in childhood is associated with increased risk of high blood pressure in adulthood. Researchers linked two or more daily servings of such drinks to a 52 percent higher risk compared with fewer than three servings per week. Swapping one daily serving for whole fruit was linked to lower risk.

A University of Cambridge laboratory study found that many common sweeteners directly influence the growth of gut bacteria. The effects often changed when sweeteners were combined with medications or other substances. Researchers stressed that further human studies are needed to understand any health implications.

A small clinical trial found that short periods of calorie restriction lowered inflammation markers tied to gum disease. Researchers at King's College London led the study involving patients in Spain. The results suggest dietary changes could complement standard dental treatments.
