Des chercheurs proposent un barrage au détroit de Béring pour stabiliser l'AMOC

Une équipe de scientifiques néerlandais a présenté des simulations montrant qu'un barrage massif à travers le détroit de Béring pourrait aider à prévenir l'effondrement de la circulation méridienne de retournement atlantique (AMOC). La proposition a été exposée lors d'une importante conférence sur les géosciences à Vienne ce mois-ci.

Jelle Soons et Henk Dijkstra de l'université d'Utrecht ont utilisé des modèles climatiques avancés indiquant que la fermeture du détroit renforcerait l'AMOC, en particulier si la construction débutait d'ici 2050. Leurs travaux antérieurs à plus faible résolution avaient donné des résultats mitigés, mais les nouveaux calculs par supercalculateur ont montré une reprise étonnamment robuste du système actuel, qui apporte des conditions plus clémentes en Europe du Nord.
