火山活動がオントンジャワ海台下の海洋プレートを変質させていた

1億年以上前に発生した地球史上最大規模の火山噴火が、オントンジャワ海台下の海洋プレートの構造と化学組成を変化させていたことが科学者らにより明らかになった。地震波データの分析から、垂直方向に広がるマグマの通り道(岩脈群)と、岩石の化学的な変化の痕跡が確認された。研究成果は「Geophysical Research Letters」誌に掲載されている。

岡山理科大学の志藤あずさ氏率いる研究チームは、海底地震計によって記録されたPo波およびSo波を用いて当該プレートを調査した。その結果、マグマが割れ目に貫入して冷却されることで形成される「岩脈群」によって、水平方向の層が横切られている様子が観測された。

さらに、チームは異常に遅い地震波速度を測定した。これは、熱化学プルームに由来するマグマがプレートを単に通過しただけでなく、再肥沃化と呼ばれるプロセスを通じて周囲のマントル岩石を化学的に改質したことを示している。

オントンジャワ海台は、1億1000万〜1億2000万年前に西太平洋で形成された。これは地球上で最大の海洋台地であり、惑星史上最大とされる火山イベントの結果として生じたものである。

今回の研究は、このような大規模な噴火が広範囲にわたる貫入ネットワークを形成し、プレートの組成を変化させることで海洋プレートそのものを変形させ得ることを示唆している。本研究には、岡山理科大学、東京科学大学、広島大学の研究者が参加した。
