Researchers studying young adults with major depressive disorder have reported an unusual energy “signature” in both the brain and immune blood cells: higher ATP-related measures at rest, paired with a reduced ability to increase energy production when demand rises. The findings, published in Translational Psychiatry, may help explain common symptoms such as fatigue and low motivation, though the work is early and based on a small sample.

A University of California San Francisco study has linked lower but still normal levels of active vitamin B12 to slower thinking and white matter damage in healthy older adults. The research, published in Annals of Neurology in 2025, suggests current guidelines may miss early neurological risks. Researchers examined 231 participants with an average age of 71.

Scientists are raising new questions about the relationship between vitamin B12 and cancer risk. While deficiency has long been known to increase dangers, recent studies suggest very high levels may also play a role.

Researchers at the University of Toronto Scarborough have found that feeling mentally sharp on a given day can boost productivity by up to 40 minutes. The study, published in Science Advances, tracked university students over 12 weeks and connected clearer thinking to setting and achieving bigger goals. Factors like sleep and workload influence these daily fluctuations.

Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco report that higher levels of the iron-associated protein FTL1 in the hippocampus of older mice are tied to weaker neural connections and worse performance on cognitive tests. In the experiments, reducing FTL1 in older mice was associated with increased neuronal connectivity and improved memory performance, findings published in Nature Aging.

A major randomized trial led by Mass General Brigham found that a four-week course of high-dose vitamin D3 started soon after a positive COVID-19 test did not reduce acute illness severity, healthcare visits or deaths, and did not curb household spread. But in an analysis limited to participants who consistently took the assigned pills, researchers observed a small, borderline statistically significant difference in lingering symptoms reported eight weeks after infection, a finding they say warrants further study.

Teenagers and young adults who reported using pre-workout dietary supplements were more than twice as likely as non-users to say they slept five hours or less per night, according to an analysis of Canadian survey data published in the journal Sleep Epidemiology.
