研究チームが、寄生菌である冬虫夏草から、損傷時に自己修復し、数週間以内に土壌で分解される繊維を開発した。この素材は実演用としてドレスに仕立てられた。

中国科学院の李柯(Ke Li)氏と彼女のチームは、このキノコを液体培養でペレット状に育てた後、柔軟なシート状に成形した。彼らはシートの脆化を防ぐためにグリセリンで処理を施し、色付けのために遺伝子組み換え酵母を、あるいはセルフクリーニング機能や紫外線保護機能を付与するために他の真菌を追加した。

損傷は、新しい湿ったペレットを塗布することで修復可能であり、ペレットが影響を受けた領域にわたって成長する。この繊維は乾燥している間は休眠状態を保つが、栄養分を含む湿度の高い環境下で活性化する。
